David, G7BEH, is currently attempting the 432MHz UKAC contest. This is a cumulative contest and takes place every second Tuesday of the month (which fits in nicely with the first Tuesday being Club night!).
The contest series operates at two 'levels' - one for the individual, and the other for the Club. As an RSGB associated club, any points gained also go towards the operator's club.
He uses Pilsdon Pen as a base from which to operate, setting up a short mast, aerial and tent from which to work. So far this year, the weather has been awful! April was no better, with the spectaular views that can be seen from the top of Pilsdon Pen, covered in thick fog.

The aerial used is a Diamond 15 element yagi, which sits atop a mast made from strong utility pole sections. As David points out, "it's a bit of a struggle getting the mast sections, a tent, the radio gear, and the aerial up there on my own.. but at least the antenna breaks down into two pieces!".

David uses an aging Yaesu FT790R for the contest series, putting out 1W maximum - so definitely QRP territory! The contest has various sections that one can operate in; David is clearly in the AL - low power - section, which allows up to 10W to be used, but most operators in this category use the full amount allowed.

Despite the disadvantage, some good contacts are made, and 250km+ distances are not unusual. With the results announced following the April contest, TDARC has improved its position and currently stands in 19th place (out of 31). David is currently 10th out of 51 in the AL section.
The next 432MHz contest is on Tuesday, May 12th at 20:00 local time. Listen out between 432,150 and 432.300 (USB) which is where most activity is.
